For your practical test you must take your photo card licence. If you don't, the test will not go ahead.

After meeting the examiner, they will check your licence, and ask you to sign the test report form. They will ask you if you would like your instructor to accompany you on test. This is entirely your choice, I am happy to sit in the back if you think it will help, (I am not allowed to take part in the test) or I can stay at the test centre.

You will have an eyesight test - where you will be asked to read a number plate. If you fail this the test will not continue.

Your examiner will ask you 1 Safety question at the beginning, and 1 show me question while you are driving.

The driving part of your test will last about 40 minutes. You'll be examined on your general driving, and ability to reverse your car safely. You will be asked to do 1 manoeuvre chosen from:

        Forward bay park
Pull up on the right, reverse
        Parallel park
                                            Reverse bay park.

You may also be asked to carry out the emergency stop exercise.

Throughout the test you should try to drive in the way you have been taught.
If you make a mistake, don't worry about it as it may be a minor driving fault and may not affect your result.

Your test will include approximately 20 minutes of Independent driving This is designed to assess your ability to drive safely while making decisions independently. You will have to drive by either following:

  Following Sat Nav
                                Traffic signs
                                                                     A series of directions
                                                                                                                   A combination of both

It doesn't matter if you go the wrong way - that can happen to the most experienced drivers, as long as you do so safely. Independent driving is not a test of your orientation and navigation skills, it means making
your own decisions - e.g. if and when to signal.

At the end of the test you will be given the results, and some feedback.

To pass you must have 15 or less minor driving faults and no serious faults.

When you pass you will receive a pass certificate, this is your licence until your full licence arrives, usually about 2-4  weeks later.
